How to check any painter yourself
- Look up the license. Go to cslb.ca.gov, choose Check a License, and enter the number. Confirm it says current and active and includes C-33 or B. In California, any job of $1,000 or more in labor and materials needs a licensed contractor.
- Get the prep in writing. Washing, scraping, caulking, patching, and priming should be spelled out in the estimate. Most of the difference between two bids lives here.
- Ask what paint goes on. A brand and product line, not just "premium paint."
- Ask about lead if your home is older. Homes built before 1978 can have lead paint, and prep on those homes has federal rules.
- Ask for proof of liability insurance and have it sent to you directly.
